DDR Commission disarms 70 combatants in S Kordofan

The Commissioner of the Northern Sudan Disarmament, Demobilization, and Reintegration Commission, Sulaf Al Din Saleh, said that about seventy combatants from the Popular Defense Forces have been demobilized in South Kordofan State.

Mr. Saleh said that the total number of eighteen-thousand (18,000) combatants from the Sudan Armed Forces, the SPLA and the Popular Defense Forces have been initially demobilized in the State.

Saleh explained that the Commission is working in line with the South Sudan Disarmament, Demobilization and Reintegration office in South Kordofan and the Blue Nile State, in its process of disarmament.

In the same context, the largest DDR process in Juba and 8 other areas will start the process tomorrow with an expected 35,000 SPLA soldiers to be disarmed.

The United Nations Mission in Sudan, which is assisting in facilitating of the CPA implementation, said in a statement that the celebration will be attended by the President of Government of South Sudan, Salva Kiir Mayardit and members of Government of National Unity and GoSS, in addition to UN officials.

The statement also said that the DDR commission aims at disarming a total of 180 thousand ex-combatants.
