Official announcement of the results of 5th population census
May 21, 2009 (Miraya FM)
The Fifth Population Census results have revealed that Sudan's overall population figure is more than thirty nine million people, of which south Sudan's population is more than eight million.
In a press conference held today in Khartoum, the General Supervisor of the Fifth Population Census, Dr. Yassin Al Haj Abdeen, said the reservation of the South Sudan Census Commission on some of the results are baseless.
He added that the results have been approved by general consensus.
Dr. Abdeen also said that the census operations were carried out in full collaboration between the south and north census commissions.
Meanwhile, the Sudan People's Liberation Movement and the Government of South Sudan have expected the population of south Sudan to be at least one third of Sudan's total population, which is more than the officially announced figure.
The SPLM had repeatedly warned of endorsing any figure that does not meet its expectation.
