D/SG Cde Itto to launch SPLM campaign in South Kordofan

Juba
7 May, 2009 (SPLM today)

The SPLM Deputy Secretary General for the Southern Sector was expected to launch the party’s mobilization campaign in South Kordofan, as the SPLM gears up for the forthcoming general elections.

Comrade Dr. Anne Itto left for the region on April 30, 2009, along with the SPLM’s team charged with organizing the people of the Nuba Mountains and preparing them for elections scheduled for early next year.

Her visit to the region coincided with the commemoration of the late SPLA commander Youssef Kuo Mekki.

“The Nuba people are commemorating the life of late Youssef Kuo today and it’s planned to bring together Nuba leaders and people from all over Nuba Mountains,” said Cde Itto, shortly before leaving Juba.

“And we in the Southern Sector want to be a part of this day … when we remember our martyr and hero of the movement,” the deputy Secretary general added.

Cde Itto said that she was also traveling to the Nuba Mountains to welcome newly appointed deputy governor for South Kordofan, Cde Abdel Aziz Adam Al Hilu, a leading figure in the SPLM.

SPLM Chairman Cde Salva Kiir Mayardit recently nominated Cde Al Hilu to the position, replacing former deputy governor Cde Daniel Kodi.

“We want from the Southern Sector to take him personally to South Kordofan and the state capital Kaduguli.

“So that we introduce him as our leader, our choice as deputy governor for that area so that people would know whom SPLM has brought to lead them in replacement for Daniel Kodi,” Cde Itto pointed out.

Earlier this year, the South Kordofan State Liberation Council voted to unseat Cde Kodi from his position as SPLM chairperson, a move that threatened to fragment the SPLM in the state.

“One of the things I’ll do is we will work with the state Liberation Council to elect a new chairman of SPLM for that state,” said Cde Itto.

She added that a serious endeavor to reconcile SPLM rank and file in the state would follow.

“But most importantly we want to start a new page of unity so that that state can prepare for the upcoming elections,” the Deputy Secretary General emphasized.
