DDR Begins in South Kordofan Next Week

A disarmament, demobilization and reintegration program is expected to start next week in South Kordofan state.

The United Nations Missions in Sudan is planning to disarm former SPLA combatants in Southern Kordofan.

Speaking during a press conference in Juba on Monday, the regional head of UNMIS in southern Sudan, David Greesly, said they have identified the number of those to be disarmed.

[David Greesly]: “The purpose of this team is to help provide the kind of assistance that we will be providing to the government based on their request.

A second DDR program is scheduled to kick off in Southern Kordofan, in the towns of Kauda and Julut, next Monday April 27th. Nearly 4,300 former SPLA combatants have been identified.”

Greesly added that more than 50 former SPLA combatants are expected to be demobilized every day.
