Agreements Signed to Establish Damazin - Kurmuk and Kadugli - Kawda Highways

Two agreements were signed Monday at the Ministry of Finance for establishment of Damazin - Al-Kurmuk and Kadugli - Kawda roads. The agreement on the implementation of Damazin - Kurmuk road was signed by the Director of the National Highways and Bridges Authority, Hamid Wakil, and the implementing Hejlij Company. Kadugli - Kawda road wil be executed by the Chinese Sico Sudan Company.

The Minister of Finance, Dr. Awad Al-Jaz, congratulated the Walis (governors) of the Blue Nile and South Kordofan States on implementation of the two road projects. He said that establishment of the two roads will boost the relations between the citizens and peace process. The minister referred to ongoing discussion for implementation of Um-Kadada - Al-Fasher and other highways, indicating that this network of roads will be liked with an electricity network.

He appreciated the role of the donors, China and the executing companies in supporting the development in Sudan, adding that the ministry and concerned authorities will follow up the implementation of these roads with the executing companies.

The Minister of Transport and Roads, Philip Thon, said that the signing of the agreement for establishing the two roads affirms the government seriousness to implement development and services projects.

The Wali (governor) of the Blue Nile State, Malik Aggar, asserted the political and economic importance of the proposed two highways.

The representative of the donors appreciated the signing of the two agreement, and called for close follow up to the implementation of the two agreements to get assured that the two roads will be established in the fixed times.

It is to be recalled that Al-Kurmuk - Damazin road will extend to 57.7 kilometers and the cost of its implementation was put at 26.7 million dollars, while the length of Kadugli - Kawda road is 33 kilometers and will be implemented at the cost of 5.5 million dollars.

The two executing Sudanese Hejlij and the Chinese Sico Sudan Companies declared their commitment to establish the two roads in the determined time. The General Director of Hejlij Company, Engineer Obeid Fadl Al-Moula, said that his company will begin its work to establish Damazin - Kurmuk highway as of next February. The Chinese company pledged to establish Kadugli - Kawda road during a period of 10 months.
