17 May 2008 (Miraya FM)
The acting Spokesperson of the United Nations in Sudan (UNMIS), Kouider Zerrouk, said that clashes have renewed between the Sudan People’s Liberation Army (SPLA) and the Sudan Armed Forces in Abyei on Friday.
Speaking to Miraya FM, Mr. Zerrouk said that UNMIS staff in the area have been withdrawn. He said that only the UN troops from Zambia are left in the town. The UNMIS Spokesperson called on both sides to cease hostilities.
The UNMIS called on the SPLA and the Sudan Armed Forces to respect the agreement they signed on Friday to end the fighting in Abyei. The agreement was reached at a meeting of the Area Joint Military Committee under the auspices of the UN Mission in Sudan.
The Special Representative of the UN-Secretary General to Sudan, Ashraf Qazi, called on both sides to protect civilians in the area and provide them with basic services, especially with the poor humanitarian situations.
