No Renegotiation of Abyei Protocal, Says Kiir
Juba
12 March 2008 (SRS)
The head of the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement and the President of the Government of Southern Sudan says that SPLM will not agree to any significant changes to the Abyei protocol in the CPA.
Speaking at a forum of southern Sudan governors on Monday in Juba, Mr. Kiir said that the dispute over the north-south border, particularly in Abyei, remains a serious threat to the CPA. He promised that a recent proposal from the NCP would be reviewed but made no assurances it would be accepted.
[Salva Kiir]: “There is now a new proposal from the National Congress Party for interim boundaries for the Abyei administration. We are still studying the new proposal but I must assure you that we are not and we will not go back to renegotiate the Abyei protocol.”
Mr. Kiir also alleged that the Sudan Armed Forces have redeployed within southern Sudan and that Missiriya nomads in northern Abyei are advancing southwards with heavy weapons.
