South Sudan's official accuses elements in NCP of fuelling tention in Abyei

18 February 2008 (Miraya FM)

Minister of Cabinet Affairs in the Government of southern Sudan Dr. Luka Biong  accused some elements in the National Congress Party of worsening the security situation in Abyei by supporting the Misseiriya tribe in the area.

He said that those figures are encouraging the Misseiriya tribe to fight against the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement (SPLM) and its army.

Dr. Biong affirmed that the government of southern Sudan was responsible for all the citizens of Abyei regardless of their ethnic background. He denied the involvement of the SPLA in the recent killing of four people in Abyei.

Misseiriya tribesman and member of the Interim National Assembly Mohammed Abdallah strongly rejected the SPLM’s accusations against his tribe. He said that both the NCP and the SPLM are responsible for what is happening in Abyei.

Meanwhile, the First Vice-President, President of the Government of Southern Sudan Lt. Gen. Salva Kiir Mayardit excused himself from attending the presidency meeting that was supposed to be held on Sunday.

Speaking to Miraya FM, the Minister of Cabinet Affairs in the Government of Southern Sudan Dr. Luka Biong said that Salva Kiir decided not to participate in the meeting due to his hectic schedule since his return from his recent visits to Cairo and Asmara, in addition to the developments in the Abyei issue.
