NGO staff, northern Sudanese families evacuated from Abyei

Five SPLA soldiers and one Miseriya nomad have been killed in clashes yesterday near Abyei town. NGOs have evacuated their staff from Abyei and the northern residents have also evacuated their families.

The Head of the NCP in Abyei, Zakaria Atim, said clashes took place when the Miseriya were heading to Bahr al Arab or river Kiir. Atim said the SAF battalion 31 has managed to open the road to Abyei.

The SPLM Politbureau in Abyei issued a statement calling on the GoNU to intervene immediately and the Joint Defence Board to take appropriate measures.
