The Special Representative of the UN Secretary General, Jan Pronk, visited JMM/JMC on May 26 and 27. In the course of his visit, he and Brigadier General Jan Erik Wilhelmsen signed an agreement on how the UN and the JMM/JMC are going to cooperate until June 20, when the UN observers will assume duty in the Nuba Mountains.

After a briefing by Head of Mission JMM/JMC, Jan Erik Wilhelmsen, the SRSG and his delegation visited the Wali of South Kordofan in Kadugli. Later the same day the visiting party went to Lwere, where they met Ismael Jallab Khamis, Commander of the 4th front of SPLA. Several leaders of the SPLM took part in the meeting.

The visit to the Eastern Jebels was concluded when the SRSG had the opportunity to meet the UN and NGOs working in the Kauda area. A similar meeting took place in the JMC HQ, Tillo, with the Kadugli based UN and NGO staff the same day.

A Memorandum of Understanding between UNMIS and JMM/JMC was signed. Since March 24, 2005, JMM/JMC is under operational control of the UNMIS Force Commander, and the agreement regulates the practical impacts on JMM/JMC’s performance.

The second day of the visit, Pronk and his delegation visited Sector 3, Umm Sirdibba and Sector 4, Miri Hills, before returning to Khartoum. UNMIS spokesperson Radia Achouri stated that the delegation has been deeply impressed with what has been achieved in the Nuba Mountains with both parties and the JMM/JMC.
