JUNE 2004 MONTHLY REPORT UNICEF OPERATIONS IN SOUTHERN SUDAN
According to revised estimates developed by UNICEF in conjunction with the New Sudan Centre for Statistics and Evaluation (NSCSE), about 22% of the deaths of children under five in southern Sudan are attributed to diarrhoea caused by poor hygiene and unsafe drinking water. This amounts to over 22,000 preventable deaths from diarrhoea alone each year. In efforts to combat this situation, UNICEF continued to extend access to clean drinking water and better sanitation for the people of southern Sudan. Through the combined efforts of UNICEF, counterparts in the SRRC and other partners, the following was accomplished during the month of June.
