Seven civilians were killed Tuesday when a plane they were travelling in crashed in central Sudan's Nuba Mountains region amid stormy weather, reliable sources said Wednesday.

The Joint Monitoring Mission/Joint Military Commission, an international group of ceasefire monitors based in the Nuba Mountains, said the Antonov 12 went down about 50 kilometres (30 miles) east of the town of Dilling.

It had had been reported missing since Tuesday evening, when a severe storm hit the area, the monitoring group said in a statement, which gave no details of casualties.

A well-placed source told AFP that seven civilians had been aboard the plane, which was heading to the town of El Obeid, and that none had survived the crash.
