A Sudanese Government newspaper said today that 163 military men and civilians were arrested after an unsuccessful coup was reported last week.
The daily El Sahafa also said Philip Abbas Gaboush, a politician from the southwestern Sudanese Nuba tribe who is suspected of masterminding the attempted coup, had surrendered.
Sudan's official press agency said Mr. Gaboush and six of his followers were arrested Friday. The agency said Mr. Gaboush had been hiding in the residence of an African diplomat, who was identified by some sources as a secretary in the Ethiopian Embassy.
