A member of parliament-SPLM for North Kordofan state escaped an attempt on his life on Wednesday, March 19th on his way to Dilling.
Abubakar Asu, 54, was moving from his constituency of Abuzabad to Dilling, 110km away in the Nuba Mountains when gunmen fired several gunshots at his oncoming vehicle.
"When we reached in a small forested place between Dabkar and Farshai, some gunmen emerged from the bush and tried to stop my car, Atoz,” he said. “The driver immediately sensed the incoming danger and fled faster."
The motive behind attempt on his life is unknown but there is great tension in the area between the Nuba and Misseriya. One hour after the incident, Abubakar and his driver made it successfully to Dilling town. From the town of El-Obeid, the state capital, Abukar told The New Sudan Vision the bullets that were intended to kill him landed at his seat, but he was not hurt.
Hassen Hamad, an SPLM party member said "the would-be assassins of MP Abubakar might have known his traveling schedule."
While acts of banditry are rampant in both Kordofan and Darfur, the targeting of government and party officials is unusual.
